The State Construction Inspection as a state institution started its mission-all-ambracing supervision in favor of Latvia state and its society in January 1, 1998 as an institution subordinated to Ministry of the Environmental Protection and Regional Development. To improve the structure since January 1, 2003 the operation of The State Construction Inspection was subordinated to Ministry of The Economics of Latvia.

The SCI carries out the functions, defined in the Construction law. To provide the peformance of these functions, The SCI excersises such tasks:

• Controls the officials and the state and local authority institutions - participants of construction - to observe the law and other requirements of legislation in the area of construction.
• Carries out the control over building design acceptance, delivery of building permit, inspection of construction work, building conveyance into exploitation and the state control over the procedure of the letter.
• Controls building materials and products to meet conformity assessment in the regulated area
• Controls Hydropower Plant Dams to be meet the legal requirements
• Organizes building design, construction work and building expertise in order to evaluate the adequacy to legal requirements and technical regulation
• Takes part in work of commission of construction acceptance of construction work fully orgartly is financed from the state or local auditory funds or into exploitation is conveyed a socially significant building
• Considers applications and complaints and complaints and responds to them accordnig to its competence
• Takes part in work of special commission in order to ascertain the cause of accidetnts taken part in buildings atc.
